At the recommendation of a very knowledgeable friend, I bought the VeePeak OBD2 (bluetooth enabled) scantool and installed it into the OBD port on my 1997 XJ6
With it, I'm able to scan "codes", and the results of the scan come directly to my cell phone. To enable the Bluetooth connection, and code reading abilities you also need to download an APP to your phone (apple or Android) named "TORQUE". There are two versions of the app named "TORQUE"... One is free, (but I couldn't download it) and the other (TORQUE PRO) is $4.95.
THE plug in scan tool is $13.95 via Amazon (link provided below) and "TORQUE" is $4.95. LINK to the Software to the "TORQUE" app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque&hl=en_US&pli=1 ($4.95)
LINK to the VEEPEAK (OBD2) Bluetooth Scanner. On AMazon it's available for $13.90. There may be others, but this one was recommended to me, and it's the one that I bought and installed. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011NSX27A?tag=bg1-763090-20
