We do not drive on gravel. Gravel roads do not exist for rally instructions. Dead end roads do not exist. Instructions referencing either gravel road or dead end roads is redundant, or information only. Driveways, park roads, or obviously private roads do not exist and should be ignored, unless specific instructions to the contrary are given.
Read instructions carefully. Make sure you have completed ALL of the actions required before moving on to the next instruction. This is important.
Instructions will NEVER instruct you to do anything unsafe, or illegal. You will never travel further than five miles without an additional instruction or note to the route.
Cast = Average driving speed for this part of the course. It takes effect when the front tires pass the object or ”sign” in the instruction. Because of stopping for stop signs, slowing for curves, restarting from stops, driver must normally maintain a speed two/three MPH above cast speed.
T or Turn = turn onto the paved road. If no obvious choice… NO gravel, NO Dean End, continue until it is obvious. This is important.
After = Take action but only after having seen or done the previous part of the instruction.
At = Take action here.
L or Left = Turn left.
R or Right = Turn right.
Opportunity = kind of like After, but leads you to something else to do.
L 2 nd Opportunity = Turn left at the second opportunity. Remember… finish
the previous instruction first before moving on to the next.
T = represents a T in the road. You can approach the T from any of three
directions. May be easy to miss.
An instruction of R at T, where one leg of the T is gravel, does not exist. It
is merely a continuation of your route until you do get to that location. This
is also important.
Y = represents a Y in the road. You will never go back from a Y. Follow the
obvious route.
Onto = You will be directed onto a specific street, avenue or highway.
PU or Pick-up = A deviation from an existing road. It would be used most
likely in the case of a Y in the road.
Word, or words in “quotes” represent a sign. The words will only be a
predominant part of the sign.
If a word is NOT in “quotes” it represents an object, a building, a park, etc.,
but must be identified as such by a sign.
RRX = railroad crossing
“RRX” = Sign
OL = object on left.
SOL = sign on left.
Signs can be as much as a 90 degree angle from the route, but NO looking
back.
SOH = sign overhead.
__|
RLC = right/left chicane. (A serpentine curve in the road.) |
TL = traffic light
SS = stop sign
Make sure rally instructions are complete and legible. Ask questions before
starting the rally.
RT is a direction. Navigator instructions to driver should be YES, NO,
CORRECT, OK. Avoid the affirmative RIGHT. Staying on course is the most
important thing.
DIY = Do It Yourself… follow the obvious route.
STILE = Ladder over, or through a fence.
Check Point = Either manned, or unmanned, this is a place for action.
Instructions will either tell you to check your time and continue, stop if
